Nutrition Education Initiatives
In order to educate children and young people about the importance of good nutritional habits and the benefits of a proper diet, some targeted actions have been held. Firstly, a training for trainers activity has been implemented to allow 120 directors and 1,200 teachers of schools to acquire knowledge and competences concerning how to promote nutrition education initiatives promoting Mediterranean Diet in schools. The shared Mediterranean Knowledge System of Mediterranean Diet and its tools represent the main source for acquiring knowledge and competences during the courses.
Secondly, by the cooperation of trained directors and teachers, 120 pilot projects have been implemented in primary and secondary schools involving almost 5,000 students. According to specific needs of each school and of each project country, each pilot project have concerned one of the following activities:

Mediterranean Diet taste laboratory;

farms and factories visits;

school vegetables gardens;

competitions ideas on Mediterranean Diet;

Mediterranean Diet school canteens check-up.
The tools included in the Mediterranean Diet tool-kit have been used and distributed to pupils during the activities.
